SP1 left over files (XP Pro (SP1))

When I installed SP1 I noticed an odd thing. It didn't use the drive I had set up for temporary files but chose another drive. Now I have a folder left on this drive the name of which is a string of numbers and letters. The folder contains one more folder called "update". If I try to open this I get an access denied message (I've only set up one user account and this has full privileges). What is this folder. Why is it there and how can I get rid of it or if it is needed move to another drive.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

    Chris,
Exactly where is this folder and can you give us a screenshot of it?

    Thanks Bob,

Here's a screen shot of the error message. Originally the file was at the root of W: drive (that's an external hard drive). I moved it into the folder W:Setup related. If I look at the properties of the update folder they are set to read only. I can uncheck this box. But as soon as I try to delete the folder or look inside it I get the error message and the read only attributes have been reset. I'm sure the folder has something to do with SP1 because at one time I had two folders with a long name each with an update folder.. My first installation of SP1 failed and I ended up reformatting C: drive and starting again. In both cases SP1 chose my external drive to create the folder. I deleted the other folder without an error message.

PS Just Edited this messge to change the graphic - it was wrong.

    Chris,
First, the read only attribute has another use with XP. It has nothing to do with the folder being read only. That is only relevant for files. Have you refreshed the Explorer view? If you look at the folder security properties are you the owner? Can you take ownership?

How do I find the security properties? Do I need to change the Folders option: "Use Simple File Sharing"? At the moment there are three tabs: General, Sharing and customised. Nothing about security. How can I take ownership? I'm the only one who uses this computer. Who else could the owner be?

    Thanks,

    Chris

I would first try Shift+Delete to delete the folder, this bypasses the recycle bin and sometimes resolves the problem.

If this fails (probably will in this case) then try this:
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Once you have gained ownership try to delete the folder. If you still can not delete it boot into safe mode and try deleting the folder

Thanks, that did the trick, I was able to delete the folder without needing to resort to safe mode. Now that I have turned off simply file sharing should I leave it switched off. Is that more secure? I remember that's how I used to have my computer set up before reinstalling.

The difference between simple file sharing and using the Security tab is the level of control you have over what access particular accounts have to files and folders. As you only have one user account it makes little difference. I only have one user account and have simple file sharing turned off.

    Chris,
I am late checking in to the lounge today, so I see you have your problem solved already. Just have to be faster on the mouse draw, I guess. <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

Thanks, Bob and Tony. It 's good to know there's a place to go when Windows starts fooling around. I wonder why SP stuck the folder there in the first place. I still have SP2 to face. I wonder what little treats that holds in store. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

I agree with Bob. Go for Sp-2 after backing up your system.
