Delete Temp Internet Files (IE 6)

I recently found that I could not View Web page source code and if I tried to save an image on a Web page it always defaulted to a bmp file type. After clearing the IE cache (temporary Internet files), things are back to normal. I don't notice any difference in browsing after deleting the files. Is there anyway that these files can be deleted regularly? Can the cache be turned off all together?

To delete the file make sure that "Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" is checked. To set the cache size Tools | Internet Options | General. Then in the Temporary Internet Files section 'press' the Settings button.

You would not enjoy using the Lounge if you turn your cache off completely, because you would have to re-download all the common elements every single time you changed pages, from Lex, to the stylesheet, to every little button. Caches are a good thing, except on the rare occasions when they go bad (or if you don't want anyone to get on your computer and see your browsing habits). <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi Joe,

Can you suggest a number to set the temporary cache files size to be?

    Thanks,

    Marilyn

    Hi Marilyn

Joe is not online so I will give you an answer. There is no set rule about the best size for the cache file. The default size of 10% of the disc size was OK when hard drives were quite small but as hard drives increase in size this creates very large cache files. I do not use Internet Explorer much and have set the cache size to 20MB. With my main browser, Firefox, I have the cache set to 50MB.

    Hi Marilyn,
I've got mine set to 20MB. That seems to be sufficient for a broadband connection and the sites I normally visit. If you have dialup try something larger such as 50 mb. Then just adjust as your surfing experience dictates.

    Hi Tony,

Thanks for your response. I am on dial up unfortunately, so will go with the higher number. Thanks for the suggestion.
