    Unwelcome Error Shutdown (XP/Office 2000)

Did a clean install - after adding the MS service pack to update my re-installed Office 2000 - have an Error - Windows Shutdown, citing "NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM that occurs when I've been working about an hour or so. The systems shuts down and restarts, giving me 60 seconds to save and close everything out.

    It is annoying. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

That is generally the symptom of the Blaster worm. Have you run an full A/V scan? Many A/V vendors have tools specifically for this.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for the help - an A/V scan is the Norton Scan (I hope)? I will run it now.

    Peace.

Yes it is. If you run into probelms with that here's an MS article with more information: A tool is available to remove Blaster worm and Nachi worm infections from computers that are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP

Further to Joe's post, this symptom can be caused by a random, incoming packet to the Windows RPC port. To block the effect of those packets requires the patch that cures Blaster, from Microsoft's downloads page or Windows Update. Short term workarounds include a firewall that protects the RPC port or going into the services control panel and disabling RPC. I forget the details, but they were posted here back when Blaster traffic was hot and heavy.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks - ran Norton and then this morning did what you advised - downloaded MS03-26 - then KB833330 - didn't work the other way around. I am grateful for your help. I am learning!!! I suspect the Blaster worm likely caused me all sorts of trouble and I addressed it by the clean install. With any luck, it won't revisit, now.

    Peace.

    Hi Jefferson,

You've helped me before - thanks again. In a brutal world, kindness is extra cool. I am grateful.
