    Mail Merge xxx-xx-1234 (Word 2002 XP/2003)

    I need help inserting a mail merge field to only display that last 4 numbers of social security numbers. Mass mailing for the registrar's office. I did this last year but forget how. (I am getting old!) They want it to display xxx-xx-

    thanks!

    You don't mention what the data source of the mail merge is. If it is Excel or Access, it is easiest to add the last 4 digits of the SSN as an extra column there.

    If you are willing to use _ instead of - you can do this by editing the field codes. Press alt-F9 to show them. Just before the closing } add your format switch eg # "###_##_####". Unfortunately - is used as a minus sign.

    Hi Melanie,

    You're probably thinking of the solution in <post#=248200>post 248200</post#>, where I gave you a solution for outputting just the last 4 digits. Here's a revised version, that puts in the 'X's for you. With a bit of tweaking, this version would also allow you to extract just the leading or middle digits (or any comination of leading, middle and trailing digits) if you wanted.

    Cheers

    {QUOTE
    {SET ID {MERGEFIELD SSN}}
    {SET EXP1{=-{=-{ID}-ID}/2}}
    {SET EXP2{=-({ID}*(-1)-{ID})/2}}
    {SET EXP3{=-({EXP1}+{EXP2}-{ID})}}"XXX-XX-"{EXP3 # 0000}}
    Cheers,

    Yes - exactly! Thank you. I did a search but I could not find anything. I should have remembered to search for question I posted! I will keep this for future reference!
