Bloated File Size (Office XP )

Created some regular Word docs that are one or two pages with the resulting size of about 50KB.

For access sake of another who had Word 97, I resaved to document as a Word 97/6.0 document....the file turned into 2.7MB and saving to RTF was 4MB!

Is this normal? Is there a way to save a file for others with older Word versions but not so bloated that limited e-mail message sizes can be accommodated?

The file format for Word 97 is the same as for Word 2000, 2002 and 2003, so there is no need to save in a different format. The compatibility formats ('Word 6.0/95' and 'Word 97-2002 and 6.0/95 - RTF') use a fdual storage format that always causes some bloating. Moreover, Word 97 and before didn't compact images, so for example a gif or jpg image will blow up the file size (the document will store an uncompressed bitmap version of the image).
So basically, you can send a Word 2002 document to a Word 97 user "as is". It may, however, blow up in size on the recipient's PC if it is modified, but that will be after receiving it.

If your files contained graphics, the expansion is normal, as it is part of the RTF standard. The binary Word .DOC format compresses BMP files very well, and the overhead for pre-compressed files (such as GIF, JPG, and PNG) is relatively modest.

There is only one small 2KB GIF at the top of the page....that certainly cannot translate into 2-4 MB when converting to RTF or 6.0 Word, could it?

If I remember right, the graphics regardless of type will get converted to "Word Art" when insertrd in to a Word douument. So That 2KB has now become Lord know what in size.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    It's not an experiment I'm eager to replicate. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
