The Best Solution to Remove & Save Attachments? (Outlook 2003)

From your experience, what would you recommend to automatically remove and save attachments? Thank you

Re: The Best Solution to Remove & Save Attachments? (Outlook 2003)

I'm not sure there is an "automatic" way. What I do is: open the email, alternate click (for most people that is click the right mouse button) and choose Save As... and put the attachment in the folder of my choosing. If I want it gone, I choose "Remove" to take it out of my email.

It occurs to me that because there are so many choices of where you would want to save a file, and whether you want the file, Outlook could not do any of this "Automatically". However, I'm sure that someone could write some code to fit some scenarios....

    There's that issue of "best way" again. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Slipstick has several commercial products listed.

And I have some code somewhere here in this Forum if you are interested, but it isn't "automatic"; it is designed to allow the user to select a target folder for the file.

Well thank you for your views, but I insist...
We have a small office with 4 staff on a tiny network (1 domain and 1 server only). We use MDAEMON and IMAP. There is no IT people and I must keep the system running. Therefore I try hard to automatise some basic tasks (periodic cleaning of recycle bin, defragmentation). People will not look at their local PST file and try to regularly trim it !
One possible solution would be to automatically save all attachments somewhere and delete them from the PST file, which will supposedly contribute to less trouble! I know the long list of software identified at the Slipstick site and already tried some of them.
Now, I would really appreciate getting the results of your own experimentations with these programmes to select the ONE!
    Thank you

Would it be better just to delete (archive) the old mail, rather than strip out the attachments? Just a thought, as any message from which the attachment became separated would be far less usable to me than an intact message.

Re: The Best Solution to Remove & Save Attachments? (Outlook 2003)

Deleting old mail is a straight and clean method which would resolve almost all my headaches! However, I cannot do this because I am working in an NGO and I must keep emails for operational and administrative reasons.

I would love to find a piece of software which could at least (1) save attachments in a given place (leaving eventually a link in the email) , (2) delete them form the respective emails, and (3) do some automatic compressing of the PST file! Did any of you use ot try such programme? Thank you

MDaemon does allow you to extract certain attachments to a folder on the server and adds a link to extracted file to the message. Would that work?

It's not a feature we use here so I may not be able to help much more...
(What version of MDaemon are you running?)

I haven't used any of these programs; most of them save everything to one Folder, and that's not practical for me.

Defining the "best " is like defining the best car; it depends on your requirements and expectations (and possibly price). From anecdoatal comments about their Outlook product lines, I'd be inclined to first look at the Sperry, MAPILab, or Ornic attachment management products.

If you are using Outlook 2000+, PST compression is automatic in the background, and user-selected compression is rarely needed.

    Thanks for your inputs.
MDAEMON version is 7.1.2 with the Groupware add. If we can extract all attachments from all incoming emails, this is likely good news to me but my colleagues might not agree. I will dig this option a little more.
I will also start experimenting with the recommended programmes.
Thanks to all. I might come back!?
