    Can't delete files (SP1)

I have a PIII 600 MHz PC with 512 mbs of RAM 173 gbs of disk space spread across two drives. Win XP Pro with all updates and patches except SP2. Virus and adware checks are both clean. Running simple file sharing but I don't think that has anything to do with the problem since it even happens between partitions on the same hard drive. File properties for the files in question always show only "Archive" checked. All partitions are FAT32.

Problem is that one of the partitions on the big (160 gb) drive which is used for backup purposes (both from other partitions on the same drive and other drives on the network) will suddenly (well, maybe a week or two) not allow any file to be deleted. There are some 60,000 files involved.

I get an error stating "Error Deleting File or Folder" then below that "Cannot delete (file name): The directory or the file cannot be created."

I downloaded a program called "Move on Boot" which will allow me to delete the files on the next system boot but this is a very slow and laborious process and I would have to do it continually to keep up. Whenever I backup files to the same folders that were cleaned out by "Move on Boot", the files that rae copied there become "un-deletable" once again.

I'm not sure how to solve this nor do I even know what may have made the changes. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Re: Can't delete files (SP1)

    Hello,

I recently had a problem not being able to delete left over files after installing XP1. Probably our situation isn't the same, but in my case turning off simple file sharing was the answer to the problem.

See <post#=399043>post 399043</post#> in the thread: "SP1 left over files (XP Pro (SP1))"

Perhaps you need to take ownership of the files? I did, even though there was no other user account on the computer.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris (Hunt)

PS I hope the link works, I've never tried one before

Is it possible that your Recycling bin has become full or corrupted, or are you using Shift+Del to bypass the Recycling bin?

That seems to have been the problem although I'm not sure if if was a corrupted file (which I suspect) or a disk space issue. There should have been plenty of disk space available for the recycle bin. In any event, the problem appears to be solved. Many thanks - it was driving me crazy.
