extra spaces within line (2000 SR1a)

For some unknown reason, Word is placing extra spaces in a line at the bottom of a page. The paragraph is left justified. There doesn't appear to be any direct formatting. But when editing near this line, extra phantom space is added as if it is trying to justify the line. It doesn't happen at the bottom of every page.

Is this a known bug? I've not come across it before. I haven't been able to find any reference to it but finding the 'magic' search terms is tricky.

Are you viewing all the formatting marks? Checked for field codes (Alt+F9)? Reset the paragraph formatting to its style using Ctrl+Q? Just wondering whether a funny tab or a right-to-left code of some kind snuck in there.

I have noticed this in the past with documents I have editted from a friend of mine! I seemed to have solved the problem by switching on the Show/Hide paragraph marks, selecting a paragraph mark that contains formatting that is good, copying that paragrapg mark, and pasting it over the "bad" one so that it replaces it.
The paragraph marks contain the formatting instructions for the paragraph. Simply replace it with a paragraph mark of a paragraph that has the desired formatting using copy and paste!

Other things you can try is select the paragraph, and appy the Normal style over it again, or select the paragraph and press CTRL + SPACEBAR, which should remove all styles from it!

    Hope you come right!
    Regards,
    Rudi

CTRL + SPACEBAR will remove all character formatting from the selected text. To remove all paragraph formatting you should also type CTRL + Q

Perhaps the alignment has been set to "distributed" instead of "justified" by accident?

That happens pretty easily if you use keboard shortcuts for the alignment:
    Ctrl+Shift+J = distributed
    Ctrl+J = justified
