Service Pack 2 (XP home SR 1)

My automatic settings allowed successful downloading of the new service pack, but there was no dialog to install, and it didn't install. What do I do to install it? I might search for it if I knew what it was called.

Which setting do you have for Automatic Update: "download and notify"? I don't know what triggers the icon on the system tray to pop up, but perhaps a restart will jog its memory.

(General reference: Get Computer Updates from the Microsoft "protect" site.)

Yes, reply and notify (I have to activate the download, and then the install). Rebooting did nothing. Do you know what the exe file is called?

All you ned to do, is go to the Start button, All Programs and in the upper area there should be a "Windows Update" and following the on screen instructions.

Well, you're the expert...but...I already tried that. It says the only way to get SP2 is with the automatic updates activated. Mine is, and in fact this all started when I got the dialog saying SP 2 was here. I downloaded it, but then never got the balloon saying would I like to install it. Even with several reboots, it nothing else happens; I don't know where the download is, what it's called, how to get it again and/or how to install it if it is indeed lurking on my computer
(PS: for the first time using this loung, I don't seem to be getting email notification of replies either?)

Don't know what the problem is on your machine, but another solution is to download the complete SP2 package . It's big, but is you have broadband, it's not that bad. MS describes it as a "Network Installation Package" but it works just fine. The only difference between this file and what is downloaded from Windows Update is the size. The automatic update will monitor your configuration and download only what is required, whereas the above package will download the complete package which can then update any configuration.

Before any one gets their toes stomped on.

How do you connect to the Internet?

What firewall software are you running?

What Anti Virus software are you running?

And what kind of blockers are you running?

Also note, that the Microsoft servers may be VERY busy and will respond slowly.

I'm not very familiar with this feature. However, it appears from the Help that if a download doesn't get installed, you have to use the "Declined Updates" button to get it to download again.

Re: Service Pack 2 (XP home SR 1)

I use Norton 2000 antivirus, Zone Alarm (free--I just turned it off to see if anything would happen), and have a router for my in-house wire network. I also have spybot and ad-aware (this is turned off and I run it occasionally). When I right click My Computer, > Properties> it says I'm running SP1. When I go into Auto Updates, it says I'm not lacking any critical updates. The slowness of microsoft must be very great, as this has been a problem for about 3 days. So ??? what do you think?

By the way: when I search for the "Declined Updates, I get a somewhat different wording, but it's grayed out in any event, presumably because I haven't declined any critical updates.

You are on a network, but is it Dial up, DSL or cable that is the real connection?

I no longer have a machine that has pre SP2 on it, so I can not check to see how it is displayed, what are the settings in "Windows Update" as to when it is to check?

At one time I think one could set the timing to be daily, weekly, monthly and one reboot.

I'm on DSL. I've tried various settings on Windows Update: Initially I had notify me about both download and install. I then changed it to Totally Automatic, with a 3 AM time daily. I also tried before that, having it work totally automatically at 2 pm, while I was out today.

So, what do you think. I'm stymied, and would prefer not to install the one for IT professionals. Where do I go from here?

Is there any particular reason for not wanting to install " the one for IT professionsals "? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> It will update your system to exactly the same status as the automatic install and your problem will be solved. There is no user intervention required - just accept the terms and conditions of the EULA and install.

Re: Service Pack 2 (XP home SR 1)

My concern was related to 4 things: 1. Dave's note after yours spoke of getting ones toes stomped on--and I thought he may have been sounding a word of warning. 2. I have XP home, and I was concerned that the file for the IT professionals might be specifically for XP pro, and for multiple computers. 3. I thought I'd possibly be dead in the water if there was a failure and I sought support--having used an undesignated useage. 4. It seemed from the various notes by microsoft that a manual install specifically for ordinary users was forthcoming. All of these concerns could be without basis, but I'd appreciate hearing your and other's comments on them.
