Lost Sound after reinstall (XP/Office 2000)

I have lost sound after reinstalling XP - the Device Manager says everything is enabled and functioning properly - there are eight or nice devices listed.

I wonder if running the Applications Disk would help? I can't find anything that indicates what that disk is for . . . the Drivers Disk is self explanatory, but there doesn't seem to be any indication that there are any drivers not functioning.

    Thanks.

I can't see any reason to use a supplemental disk. The answer must surely be in a setting or malfunction somewhere. Would you go to the Control Panel Sounds app and look to make sure that the Mute box is not checked. You should also open the Advanced button to make sure an individual component is not muted. If nothing is muted, how about in the Sounds tab? Will any of the Windows sounds play when you test them? Finally, at the risk of a dumb question, are you sure that the speakers are plugged in securely and turned on? During or before the reinstall, did you have the machine cover off - is it possible that the sound card has come "slightly" loose and needs to be seated?

    Hi Big Al,

Sadly - nothing I am doing seems to be doing the job. The mute boxes are not checked, the devices are operating properly, the speakers are on. Didn't have the box off during reinstall and the speakers worked prior to it. Thanks for your help - I am at a loss.

Go to the MS Knowledge Base, select Windows XP and search for "no sound". There are many solutions to many different configurations. You may find a solution there.

    Hi John,

You were absolutely correct - while nothing seemed to be wrong, everything was enabled and functioning properly - did as you suggested and went to knowledge base - searched - there was an article about no sound after installation - bingo - system sounds were off - one click and it worked.

    Thanks!!

    Peace.
