    AVI Editor?

Hi folks, I just treated myself to a new digital camera - and discovered it is also a digicam, so you can imagine I'm having great fun with it!

Thing is, I need some software to play with the videos - editing, adding music/titles etc, compressing for use on a webpage (roughly 1GB per 15 mins is NOT practical!) ... well those of you who have been doing this sort of thing for a while know what I'm trying to say, but I'm not sure I do yet!

I've done some googling, but with nothing to base my ideas on, I've no idea what I'm looking for - would a few of you experts mind telling me what I should look for, how much I'll be paying (anything from free to three figures as far as I can tell) and of course, which ones you find easiest/most powerful/best value etc?

Please bear in mind I'm new to everything here, even the terminology, and keep it simple - but I would be most grateful for your advice!

If you are running Windows XP, there is Windows Movie Maker. You should find it "Start, All Programs, Entertainment, Windows Movie Maker".
This will help you decide if want to continue to play with editor or not with out spending any money.

You can re-encode the digital camera "movies" using a more efficient compression algorithm. The tools available vary depending on the format of the AVI file. You might want to visit a digicam site, such as dpreview, which offers forums for different makes of camera.

Wow - thanks, Dave, I didn't even know that was there! I shall have a play, as you suggest. That'll keep me quiet for a while ...

Make sure you have the current Movie Maker version 2. It supposed to be way better then version 1.

Thanks for the tip, Joe - I had come to the conclusion I didn't think much of it, but on checking mine was only v1, so I'm now downloading v2 and keeping my fingers crossed it is 'way better'! <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

I meant to say something about version 2 but had a brain f__t and for got it.

It still is NOT as good as some of the other products, but it is some thing to play with. I know several people that do things just fine with it. As I am NOT into video, I do not know how good it is.
