    child window (XPhome)

I have had some touble with spyware which I have corrected having taken reference to the numerous threads in the lounge. As a result of this I have a mixture of solutions on my PC which either block, or find afterwards, malware (adaware, spybot etc). I do not feel totally in control of all this, as I suspect there are overlapping areas of functionality

I think that as a result of this, when I am in explorer, and I click on a link which would before have appeared as a fixed size model box with some text or a picture in it, the link fails. What it does is bring up the child window very briefly in passing, and it then dissapears again.sometimes this happens so quickly that it might just as well not have been there at all, and you would think the link had failed.

Are there any obvious suspects before I start to invest man-hours in poking around? Thanks for any help....

Sounds like something is killing your pop-up windows. It is illogical to kill windows opened by the user, so it appears you will need to find the source and either reconfigure it or shut it off.

Pop-up blockers, which started as their own product category, now can be found in: (1) the IE in Windows XP SP2, (2) many firewall products, (3) the Google toolbar, and probably other places. (The one in Firefox seems to work very well so far, but as this is the IE board, I guess that's off-topic. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> )

thanks, I would probably not have thought of those user initiated child windows as "pop-ups" and the target of pop-up stoppers. Cant actually think of what I have done that is vaguely timed when the problem started other than upgrading adaware to the SE condition. Clearly I off on a hunt

Yup, Adaware SE. Seems the standard settings are this draconian. I only disabled it to check and hevent yet poked to see how else it can be set up. At least there is a button to switch it off easily to hand!

    thanks,
