Can't change pagefile size (WinXP Home SP1)

My new Sony laptop won't allow me to change the pagefile size. I usually set it at (max / min) twice the RAM size. If I select custom size and then input 1024mb in each box the system accepts it and requires a reboot. However, when it reboots, the page file size is back to a system managed size (about 690mb). Any ideas would be appreciated.

After you set the custom parameters, did you remember to check the "set" button?

This thread from Lockergnome suggests selecting "System Managed Size", re-booting, then going for the manual setting.
Does that work?

Are you running the NTFS file system? Have you changed any security settings for the drive on which the pagefile is located?

Re: Can't change pagefile size (WinXP Home SP1)

Tried the Lockergnome idea - doesn't work
I am running NTFS and security settings haven't been changed
I've tried working in Safe Mode - no good
The pagefile.sys file attributes are set at Hidden and I can't alter them, even in Safe Mode
Thanks again for ideas.

Try this tip from Petrie:
Even when you set the values properly, some systems don't retain your settings. If this happens, perform the following steps:

Start regedt32.exe (not regedit.exe)

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory Management

Double-click PagingFiles. The entry will appear as

Dagefile.sys 700 700

The first value is the location; the second is the minimum size; and the third is the maximum size.

Ensure the values are correct and click OK.

Reboot the machine.

Have a look here Windows XP From A to Z under "Pagefile" and see if anything there will help.

FWIW, on XP regedt32 is just a stub that runs regedit. Should not make any difference which is run.

Joe,

That's just the way the tip was worded on the Petrie site. Not my input. Wonder what the reason was for such specifics?

The regedit trick worked!
However the relevant key was at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlSessio n ManagerMemory Management
Thanks to everyone for all the help and ideas.

Bob,

With Win2k they were two different versions of the registry editor. With Regedt32 you could view the registry in read only mode to make accidental changes to the registry more difficult.

Bert,
Glad it all worked out OK with the regedit entry.
