    Need to Reinstall Photo Editor

Suddenly my Microsoft Photoed.exe will no longer open .gif nor .jpg files. I can fire up the program but it cannot open any files either via the app or via Windows Explorer. Either way I get an error message "Can't open file." I see in Windows Explorer's File Types that the file type GIF Image is still associated with the correct path to Photoed for the action Open.

I think Photo Editor will have to be reinstalled. Anyone know how to do this? The program does not appear in the list of programs in Windows' Add/Remove applet (Control Panel).

    Check out this Q260151

FYI: To reinstall Photo Editor, you should run MS Office Setup and remove it from the list of installed components. Then run setup again and re-add it.

Re: Need to Reinstall Photo Editor

Mark, you guessed right; I'm running NT4W. However, neither the KBA nor the reference to the older thread has done the the trick. As for reinstalling Photo Editor, although I've read elsewhere on the web that Photo Editor is installed as part of the Office Tools category in the Office 97 SR2 setup, when I rereun the setup program there is no listing for Photo Editor in any menued category of apps to install/reinstall. Yet I see that the Photo Editor software is in fact found on the Office 97 CD when I inspect it with Windows Explorer.

I still get the same error message. However, I have made a little bit of progress. At least now I've gotten Photoed to appear in the list of registered program files in Windows NT Explorer's Open With menu (mentioned in the other thread that you referred to).

If I had a current ERD or tape backup of the registry, then this problem would be a cinch to fix... but I don't :-(

Re: Need to Reinstall Photo Editor

The Photoed.exe problem is now fixed. I did it without using the Office CD.

Problem turned out to be a file association problem that could *not* be fixed via any method using Windows NT4(SP6a)'s Explorer.

I had to reassign the file association via the old Windows 'File Manager' utility (winfile.exe) *instead* of Windows 'Explorer' (explorer.exe).

I started winfile.exe. Then I highlighted a .gif file. Then from the File Manager menubar: File > Associate > Browse. Then I browsed to Photoed.exe, and OK.

The result was that not only did Photo Editor successfully open the .gif file, but afterwards if I opened a Windows Explorer window and View > Options > File Types... there was Photoed.exe listed for default extension .gif. So that fix got burned into 'Explorer' too.

The moral of the story is that apparently the old rarely used utility 'File Manager' which is still included in Win NT4 is not totally obsolete. It's somehow more solid than 'Explorer'.
