Style of Text in Form Field (Word 2000)

My document contains a dropdown which determines the contents of a field elsewhere. This is working fine except that I am unable to control the format of the resulting text. I have defined my styles and turned off Word 2000's autoformat options.
{IF {Dropdown4} = "Pre 2003" "Style of text here contains indents, paragraph spacing and is several lines long" "Same style here, just different text" }
Is there a way to set the style in the form field?

If you are seeing the bold curly braces, then you are viewing field codes rather than field results. Under Tools>Options...>View you can tick a checkbox to switch back and forth. For faster access, try Alt+F9. (If I've completely misunderstood your post, I apologize, but this is my best guess at what you're after.)

Jeff - it's probably my explanation. Everything works - I get the proper text appearing when the choice is made from the dropdown list (when viewing the field results, not the field codes) - but the formatting is wrong. I can't get the text to take on the proper style.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 24-Aug-04 11:09. I need more caffeine.)
The MERGEFORMATTING switch is designed to cause inserted text to take on the attributes of the underlying paragraph style. Does that work?

Have another

It's MERGEFORMAT.

Jeff,
If I simply add the switch at the end of the IF statement, no, it does not help. Is this what you meant?
{IF {Dropdown4} = "Pre 2003" "Style of text here contains indents, paragraph spacing and is several lines long" "Same style here, just different text" /MEREGFORMAT}

Can you post a sample of the text and desired formatting? There are some fields experts who I'm sure will be along to take a crack at it.

Jeff,
In producing a simple example, I have been unable to re-create the problem! By using manual line breaks inside the text instead of paragraphs, I seem to have simplified matters. I will re-post if I can't apply this to my real document.

Hi Ross:
2 things:
1. In your post, you spelled MERGEFORMAT as MEREGFORMAT
2. The switch is * MERGEFORMAT (note the asterick & space between the backslash & M).

By the way, if you apply direct formatting or the style you want to the IF field, you get the same thing.
Cheers,

Phil,
I'd spelled MERGEFORMAT correctly in the document but did omit the *!
Thanks, that did it.
