Footnotes (Word 98)

My problem is a tricky one (well for me atleast)...I'm workingon a manuscript and the first footnote is starting at 635 not 1. And when I try to insert a new footnote somewhere in the middle of the document instead of re-numbering, it goes in as the last number of the document. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions??!!

Thanks,
K

Footnotes should renumber automatically. But you knew that. When you insert a new "problem" footnote, do you have these settings in the dialog:

Number format: 1, 2, 3
Custom mark: blank
Start at: 635
Numbering: Continuous
Apply changes to: Whole document
And I'm not sure it will matter, but could you clarify your Word version -- Word 98 was a Mac-only release.

Yeah, I wish it was that easy...turns out the file was corrupted from being transferred back and forth between word perfect and word and word wasn't recognizing the word perfect footers for one reason or the other...

In the end I just have to make a new file and copy and paste the information. Lucky me!

Thanks anyway.

Many times you can repair messed-up footnotes with the macro below, which copies, deletes, and immediately re-inserts them.

Often (though probably not in your case) Track Changes is responsible for footnote numbering problems, and the renumbering problems go away after you accept/reject all changes ...

Dim myFootnote As Footnote
Dim i
For i = ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Count To 1 Step -1
Set myFootnote = ActiveDocument.Footnotes(i)
myFootnote.Range.Copy
myFootnote.Reference.Select
myFootnote.Delete
ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Add Selection.Range
Selection.Footnotes(1).Range.Paste
Next i
