    816093 not in SP2 (XP Pro SP2)

Does anyone know why the Microsoft Virtual Machine fix in 816093 was not in SP-2? I applied SP2 a couple of days ago (successfully, on a 4-year-old machine that was shipped with Windows2000), and afterwards I went to Windows Update and found that it still said I needed this patch. I did a search of this forum and found some posts from last year complaining of some problems possibly (or possibly not -- the posters didn't know) associated with applying the VM patch. I suppose I ought to download this one, too. Running jview tells me I have java version 5.00.3805. I was just wondering why this wasn't in the service pack. Any information would be welcome.

I'd say it is because of a legal decision. MS can no longer ship the VM. They can supply security fixes to existing installations for a period of time whose expiration date I've forgotten. XP does not ship with the VM. SP-1 had the VM but was removed somewhat quickly in SP-1a with the aformentioned legal settlement. SP-2 does not contain the VM. Therefore, the patch is not included for something that is not shipped with the OS.

Joe has the correct information, and there's more detail on this Microsoft website.

If you Google for Microsoft Java Virtual Machine I think you will find that there are several ways you can download it.

PS You probably want to be considering its replacement with the Sun Java Runtime Environment...

Thanks for the replies and the link.

As for going to Sun Java, I am planning to give Firefox a try when version 1.0 is released, so Sun Java is in my future.
