    moving pictures around (2002 SP3)

If I insert a picture into a drawing canvas and then drag it off the canvas onto the actual doc and then delete the canvas, I can move the picture anywhere, re-size it & rotate it.
If I simply insert the same picture into the doc without using the canvas, I can re-size it, but moving it around is rather limited & it can't be rotated.
Is there a way of inserting the picture to get the 1st result without bothering with the canvas?
    Regards,
    Peter

If you insert a picture directly, it is inserted in line with the text, i.e. it is treated as an oversized text character. Right-click the picture and select 'Format Picture'. In the Layout tab, you can specify a wrapping style. Any option other than 'In line with text' will let you rotate and move the picture.
If you want to change the default behavior, select Tools | Options... The Edit tab contains a box 'Insert/paste pictures as'. The default setting is 'In line with text'; you can change it to one of the other text wrapping options.

Thanks Hans, but it still doesn't give anywhere near the flexibilithy of the 1st option. Surely there is a way of achieving that without going through the canvas.

I hadn't tried it. Your suggestion gives exactly what I'm after.
    You're a genius. Thanks
