Time switches for shutdown.exe do not work (XP SP2)

I have been trying to set up desktop shortcuts to shutdown and re-start exactly as shown in Woody's book 'Windows XP time-saving techniques for Dummies'. Providing I don't use the time -t switch, the shortcuts work. However, if I add the -t 0 (or any other number) I just get a flash of the black DOS window and then nothing happens. Is this something to do with SP2 which I had downloaded prior to trying this technique? How do I change the default 30 secs to shutdown to a shorter time?

Many thanks to whoever comes up with the answer.

MSKB 814761: You Cannot Schedule a Windows XP-Based Computer to Shut Down and Restart by Using the AT Command with Shutdown.exe covers some of the problems using shutdown.exe, but it would seem these were fixed with SP2.

A quick Google brought up onecomputerguy where an example shows the shortcut using the -s switch. Are you including that?
(The example also shows using double digits after the -t switch - i.e. 00 instead of just 0 but I'm not sure if that is significant,)

Thanks, Leif. Unfortunately I'd already read the knowledge base article and, as you say, SP2 includes the fix. Yes, I am using the -s switch just as Woody and Onecoumputerguy both show. I'd also tried double digits for the time but with no luck. But thank you for looking.

Sometimes when SHUTDOWN.EXE doesn't work I've tried PsShutDown from SysInternals.

But there are whole articles, even whole websites, on getting Windows to shut down cleanly. Usually they're talking about the standard GUI methods, but if the GUI doesn't cause a proper shutdown, then the shutdown-type executables aren't likely to, either. (And probably vice-versa).
