Have XP SP2; Still Need Blackice? (XP Home SP2)

I'm wondering if the new bells and whistles in Windows XP SP2 make the functions of Blackice redundant?

    Anyone know?

    Hi Brad,

The Windows firewall is fairly basic so it is best to turn it off and use a third-party firewall such as BlackICE, it is not redundant.

The general consensus here is that third-party firewalls in general are still superior to the built-in firewall, in particular since the built-in firewall only monitors incoming communication, not outgoing communication; the latter could be a problem if your computer has been infected with malware.

Brad, I would strongly submit that you check out alternate products to BlackIce. There are many free alternatives to this product that do a far better job.

I agree with Mark. There are probably lots of mentions of free alternatives in the Security Forum, <!post=this thread,326015>this thread<!/post> being one example - mentions ZoneAlarm, Outpost, Sygate.
