    USB does not work

I am working on an older DELL Dimension L566cx with Windows 98 SE. When I try to plug a USB device in, nothing happens. This started when I was helping a friend install a new printer that only works with a USB cable. I havealso tried to install my Lexar jumpdrive - again nothing happens. The system simply does not recognize that anything is being plugged into the USB connection. In Device Manager, the Universal Serial Bus Controllers shows Interl 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller and USB Root Hub. No indication that there is a problem. I have formatted and reinstalled Windows 98 SE. Still nothing. I have "wiggled" the connections to no avail.

I just checked and the USB is enabled in the BIOS settings.
