    Compaq Presario 1700T

Bought the computer used and it makes a continual noise, like fan running any feed back.

If it sounds like a fan, it probably is.
If it is a rattly, mechanical noice, perhaps the fan bearings have gone or there is something physically obstructing it. With the machine switched off, can you wobble the fan blades at all?
If it is making a noise like a full vacuum cleaner, its probably full of dust.

First suspect would BE a fan, dirty or obstructed.
Second suspect is a hard drive with a worn bearing.
Open up the covers and get a peek inside while it's running. You will probably be able to pinpoint the sound from there.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

If the fan suddenly gets louder a few minutes after you connect to the Internet and CPU utilization shoots up, you may have a virus/trojan/spyware problem. (Some of these programs get very aggressive when they have a pipe to the outside world.)
