Roman page numbering (Word 2003)

Hi there
How do I force the page numbering in Roman numerals, i ii iii etc to start at i on page 2 or 3 of a document?
Regards

Re: Roman page numbering (Word 2003)

Say that you want to start numbering on page 3. Insert a section break (Insert | Break...) at the end of page 2.
Click somewhere on page 3. Select Insert | Page Numbers...
Click Format...
Specify Roman numbering and specify that you want to start at 1, instead of continuing from the previous section.
Click OK to close the Format dialog, then click Close (not OK) to close the Page Number dialog.

By unlinking the page header or footer for the second section from the first one, you can omit the page number in the first section, and display it in the second section.

mmmmm...
That's what I had done, but still started at ii.
Created a new document and followed step by step and it still seems to give me ii and not i.

Re: Roman page numbering (Word 2003)

I've had problems with this as well. What I do that seems to work is:
a) Insert a continuous section break at the very top of the 2nd page.
View headers and footers.
c) switch to either header or footer (wherever you want the page # to appear)
d) In the header/footer toolbar which pops up, Uncheck "link to previous" if it is highlighted.
e) Insert the page #
f) format the page # "starting at 1"
The key is unlinking the header or footer to the previous section.

Re: Roman page numbering (Word 2003)

I am sure that Hans' reply would have done the trick, but I have used a simple fix on occasions - simplly start the page numbering at "0" (zero) and then the correct page numbering comes up. But it would be best to do it correctly, of course - see Hans' reply.

Hi Leigh
The 0 works well with numbering, but when I try the 0 with roman numberals (i, ii, iii, iv etc) it does not work.

Re: Roman page numbering (Word 2003)

I agree with Hans method also. However, if all you're trying to do is show the page number starting on page 2 as i, then format the page numbers as ARABIC & use this formula:

{ IF { = { page } - 1 } = 0 "" "{ = { page } - 1 * roman }" }

where the curly brackets are inserted by pressing Ctrl+jF9, not typed. Note that in order to use a formula, you must have the page numbers formatted as arabic, but you can display them as roman using a numeric picture switch. If you want the "i" to start on page 3, replace the -1 with -2 (one less than the starting page).
Hope this helps,
