custom label keeps defaulting to A5 size (Office XPSP3)

    Hi

We have custom labels ordered,. 2 stickers on 1 label. The size of the whole stationery is 14.8cm x 21cm. The size of each sticker is 7cm x 11cm.
I've created a Word template to match the stationery stock. The way I've created the label template is a normal A4 size Word document, in Page setup I've customised the Paper size.

Depending on whether the printer has an envelope feeder tray, when the print job is sent to either the envelope feeder tray or MP feeder tray, on the old lexmark printers it prompts me to add paper A5 in the tray. which the print job sent is not A5. it somehow picks up & converts the print job size to A5.

any suggestions on how i should design my label template to accomodate the printer?

Those dimensions seem to match the definition of A5 paper. Perhaps Word is telling the printer you have an A5-sized document even if you've indicated Custom? I suspect that anything other than the default paper size will upset the printer. If you need to print these labels frequently, it may be best to dedicate a drawer or tray to it.

    Hi Diana:
Make sure that you don't have Tools/Options/Print tab/"Allow A4/Letter paper resizing".
    Cheers,

    Hi Phil

Yes I turned this setting off & it was still changing the paper size to A5.

The only other things I can think of is to open a document based on the template & then:
    1. Check the properties under File/Print.../Properties. This should indicate A4 paper. This should override any printer settings.
    2. Make sure that you have updated printer drivers. You mentioned that the printers were old. Perhaps you need new ones for Office XP.
    3. Under Tools/Options/Compatibility, check out the options...especially the one that says "Use printer metrics to lay out document".

Other than that, you could attach a blank document from the template & I'd take a look at it. Of course, I'm not using your printer & I have Word 2000. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Hi Diana

I'm puzzled by your post - the dimensions that you have given for your custom stationery (14.8 x 21) are A5 not A4. If I go into Page Setup and enter the dimensions you have given as a "Custom Size" then, as soon as I've finished entering those dimensions, Word changes the name in the "Paper size" box from custom to A5. That seems sensible to me given that they match A5 paper. From the dimensions you have supplied the job size is, indeed, A5 and the printer is asking for the correct paper size.

Is your problem that the tray containing the (A5) label stock is not the tray that the printer is being asked to use? In which case you will need to tell Word which tray to use (in Page Setup). Alternatively, having loaded the (A5) label stock into the tray, does your printer somehow not recognise that the tray already has A5 in it?

    Hi Diana:
I jumped to conclusions & read this too fast. I agree with Jefferson & Ian. Word is using A5 paper because the dimensions you gave are A5 paper.
