    Re: m with a symbol (Word 2000)

    Carolyn,

    Unless I am missing the point, I can't seem to find any examples of the word "memoire" on the Internet with any sort of symbol above either "m". I did see that in some French language pages it is common for a mark to appear above the first "e" as shown in this link's http://memoireonline.free.fr/ heading.

    In MS Word, there is the ability to choose from many symbols using the Insert | Symbol command. The attachment is a screen capture showing the letter "m" with a mark of some sorts above it but I do not think that is what you meant.

    Aha - I thought so but didn't want to offend...

    Now, can someone tell me how to put a bar over a lowercase "x" as in meaning the 'MEAN' in a formula in MS Excel (don't move this to Excel board please).

    There is an easier way to make these letters with accent marks. This was documented very well in the Help section of Word97 but has not been documented in newer versions. Please see the enclosed attachment.

    The easiest way to get the x with a bar above it is to install the Arial Unicode font and then choose the combining Macron from Insert Symbol.

    Hi Stuart,

    That might be the 'easiest' way, but it also forces the whole line down. As an alternative, you could use an EQUATION field, coded as:
    {EQ sup6(f(,X))}

    or for an interactive version, that lets you choose any character:
    {EQ sup6(f(,{FILLIN Character}))}

    Cheers
