    Protect Email Messages (Outlook 2003)

I have been asked by a user if it is it possible in Outlook 2003 to protect an email to avoid unwittingly deleting it ? The user is running Outlook 2003 on an Exchange 2003 Server. Any help would be greatfully received !!

On the server side, there may be a concept of a salvage folder where Deleted Items can linger for administrators to rescue. However, on the client side, particularly for messages downloaded into a PST, the best you can do is turn off automatic emptying of the Deleted Items folder. The user still can Shift+Delete to bypass that folder.

It occurs to me that there might be a Policy setting for this. If you download the Office 2003 Resource Kit and the policy editing tools, you might find a registry setting to block deletes. I have not checked (it's all I can do to stay with Office XP <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> ).

Thanks for this...the client is utilising Salvage folders to retireve deleted email up to 14 days after deletion, but as I suspected, from a typical end users perspective who will have no power to amend policy settings...the advice should be BE CAREFUL !! By default the auto empty on exit is not switched on within the company.

As Jefferson states, there's no complete solution, but with Office 2003 you might look at MS Information Rights Management and <!mskb=246153>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 246153<!/mskb>.
