Copernic Desktop Search vs WinXP Indexing Tool (XP/SP1)

    Hello,
I've just received Woody's Office Watch #9.14 & it discusses the new Copernic Desktop Search program. I'd like to install it, but am unsure if it will clash with the WinXP Indexing Tool. My questions are:
    1. Do I need to disable the WinXP Indexing Tool before I install Copernic?
    2. If so, is it as simple as removing the tick from the "Allow Indexing Service" option in the "Local Disk (C Properties" window?
    Thanks & regards,
    BillM

    1) No, you don't need it for Copernic - and I would go so far as to add that you do not need it at all.
    2) Yes. You can also disable it via the services applet (Start - Run - services.msc).

Re: Copernic Desktop Search vs WinXP Indexing Tool

    Hi,

I tried out Copernic Desktop Search (DS) but sadly wasn't impressed. It was fast but it couldn't find the kind of files I wanted. I use .wmf and .cdr files a lot. These aren't included by default. It's possible to get the Search bar to look for them by using the Options menu but even though the files can then be found no preview is generated. At least with Windows Search it is possible to use a thumbnail format. Copernic DS has very limited options for displaying files as far as I can see so it ends up occupying a lot of desktop space and only showing a limited number of results. I still prefer Windows Search which isn't saying much.

PS I don't use indexing for Windows Search

    Chris,
Thanks for the heads up. I also use software with uncommon extensions - .cad, pl1. I'll think about it some more before I install Copernic.

    Hi Bill,

You are welcome, perhaps Copernic are planning to add extra features to the paid version.

    All the best,

    Chris

I tried Copernic last night on my home computer after reading Woody's Office Watch, and I wasn't impressed. In my office I've been using X1, and have been extremely happy with it. It costs a pretty penny ($99, I think), but it has been a lifesaver for me. One of its great features (which I didn't find in Copernic) is its ability to index files on a server as well as my local machine.

Reminds me of the old days in DOS when I used Norton's Magellan. Now that was a great program!!
