Opening Files in Explorer (Excel 2002 SR1)

This is really just an annoyance and there must be an easy fix. Occasionally I'll get a call from someone that they can't open Excel. When I go to check it out, Excel opens fine and so do the files once you have Excel open. However, the ability to open the spreadsheets directly off of the desktop or in Explorer or as an attachment to Email quits working. With Excel 2000, I recall that occasionally a macro on a badly created spreadsheet would cause the "ignore other applications" box to be checked. But this isn't the case. If I uninstall and reinstall Excel, it works fine - but that takes more time than I'd like to take. Any quick fixes or other things to check?

    Much thanks.

In Windows Explorer, under Tools>Folder Options, on the File Types tab, is there still an association set up for file type XLS?

Yes it still says to use Excel to open XLS files and even when you do right click, open with, it lists Excel as the first option. It is specific to Excel as Word files open fine, etc.
