Normal.dot is getting opened just before exit (Word 2003)

I do not know when this started.
Perhaps when I installed NAV 2004 last week, or when I installed Omni Page Pro Office 14 in July.
I recently noticed that when I open a Word doc, either by double clicking, or by right clicking and choosing Open, I notice the following when exiting from Word.

    1. The Window with the doc closes, as expected.
    2. A window for Normal.dot is displayed briefly, then closes.
    3. Word exits.

Problem is not in my Auto macros as I removed Normal.dot and the problem still occurs, so NAV 2004 (or OmniPage) must be doing something in a document event or Auto macro to cause this.

    Anybody see this behavior?
    Any cures?

I think someone else posted this same set of symptoms in the past month or two. I don't recall whether we found a solution.

Re: Normal.dot is getting opened just before exit

I think that I found the culprit.

Looks like it is safe to ASSuME that the problem is being caused by OmniPage Pro Office 14.

I installed OMP on 14 July 2004, but have been very pre-occupied lately (e.g., I am having oral surgery on 13 September 2004), so I did not really
pay attention and notice the problem (at least, conciously) until last week.

"J:Program FilesScanSoftOmniPagePro14.0aware_word14.bas" contains an AutoExit macro that includes:

    NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument

Followed by code to delete two controls in the File menu, and this is followed by:

    NormalTemplate.Save

I have code in my own Auto macros to mark the Normal template as Saved, as I have the Normal template as read-only.

I suspect that it the above code that is opening the Normal template when I exit from Word.

I would then expect that anybody else having OmniPage Pro Office 14 should be seeing the same behavior.
One has to watch closely to notice the Normal template being opened and closed.

I feel that I have just found a needle in a haystack!

Heck, as I am self-employed, maybe I can hire myself out to find a needle in a haystack!

    Hi Howard:
I'm curious. Does this add-in show up in the COM Add-ins dialog box or did you need to find it using a macro?

By the way, if you pay yourself, won't you have to pay income tax on it? Maybe if you donate it, you can deduct it as a charitable contribution. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Re: Normal.dot is getting opened just before exit

I found problem by looking at .bas file in OmniPage directory.
Don't know why the file is even there, it's not used at run time.

However, looking at the code is enlightening as it reveals that the code is based on a MSFT KB article.
Alas, the programmer was not wise enough to know that the Normal template could have been opened as an invisible window.

The add-in is registered as OfficeAddin.OP14, so the startup and termination code in the add-in must have the equivalent of the AutoExec and AutoExit code in the .bas file.

Re: Normal.dot is getting opened just before exit

I have OmniPage Pro 14 installed and had exactly the same problem with NORMAL.DOT. But my problem was nothing to do with OmniPage. I downloaded a Microsoft "solution" to the issue of user data being hidden in Word documents, and Word started opening Normal.dot right then. It continued until I installed Office 2003 SP1, and that got rid of it..

THe problem is with "Omni Page Pro Office 14", not "Omni Page Pro 14".

SP 1 would have no affect on this type of problem. It's an outright coding design issue.
The problem you saw would have either been for another reason or MSFT fixed the particular problem coincident with SP 1.

OK, I guess I don't see why Omni Page Pro Office 14 would be different from Omni Page Pro 14, but Omni Page Pro Office 14 is actually what I have. You may think it's "a coding design issue" but I'm telling you that I had exactly the same problem and Office 2003 SP1 fixed it.

Re: Normal.dot is getting opened just before exit

OMP Office is more integrated with Office than is OMP. OMP Office has an OfficeAddin, don't know whether OMP has that, I would doubt it.

The problem I saw is a code design issue that cannot be fixed by an SP, it can be remedied only by changing the OMP Office addin.
Take a look at Program FilesScanSoftOmniPagePro14.0/aware_word14.bas dated 19 Nov 2003.
I have version 14.0.2004.3081 of the OfficeAddin.dll, in that same directory, dated 8 March 2004.
