Office XP Update (XP)

With the recent discussion on the Update for Office 2003, I have a question, what about the update for Office XP. When the latest update for Office XP came out, over a year ago, there was a lot of discussion about not installing it because of problems with the update. I have a CD with the update on it that I have never used based on the this discussion. Should I now install it and have all the issues been resolved?

Re: Office XP Update (XP)

We installed SP3 on all OfficeXP computers and have no complications so far.

After installing SP3, you can also install Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668 and Microsoft Office XP Update: KB833858 - the latest updates to the Microsoft Script Editor. I never read about any problems causing by these updates.

If you use Outlook, you need to apply Outlook 2002 Security Patch: KB828040. It's almost mandatory.

If you use Access, you may need to install Access 2002 Update: KB833857. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=833857 for details.

Re: Office XP Update (XP)

There were 2 main problems with SP3, Installation and Outlook.

Installation - MS released 2 versions of the update file, the smaller version (16MB) required you to have the original Office CD and with the full version (58MB) you did not need the original Office CD. Many people found that when using the full version they still needed the original Office CD to complete the update. A few people found the only way to install SP3 was to uninstall Office then reinstall it and apply the SP3 update. There is no need to apply earlier service packs before updating to SP3. Hopefully you will not have problems installing SP3 but it is best to have the original Office CD available.

Outlook - With SP3 the security in Outlook was improved (broadly speaking it took it to similar levels of security that Outlook 2003 has). This caused problems with many 3rd party add-ins that were blocked from accessing Outlook. Soon after SP3 was released most of the vendors released updates to make their software compatible with the updated security measures in Outlook. The problems with Outlook should not be an issue if you check for any updates for 3rd party add-ins you have before installing SP3.

Re: Office XP Update (XP)

Help please! I was dumb enough to try to download the update without realising I'd need the original installation CD. Unfortunately it looks as though I've lost this during a recent move. Once the message popped up requesting the original CD I clicked on 'cancel', but now I get the installer window appearing every time I attempt to open an excel worksheet & half the time it blocks me being able to access the worksheet at all (it seems to prevent Excel from opening). I'm running Windows XP Home with Office XP - any thoughts would be very welcome.

Hopefully the following will help.

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

Which version of the update were you trying to use, the small download that does require the CD or the full download that usually does not require the CD. Both versions of the download are available from Office XP SP3 download page

Why service packs, updates, and security patches may require the Office XP CD-ROM

Thanks, Tony - you're a lifesaver. I'm going to try the full download.
By the way - re. my previous post regarding a Spanish version of Windows XP SP2 - it was on the webpage on 15th September (european timeband) and downloaded & installed without problems. Thanks again.
