Two Page Numbering Questions (Word 2000)

I'm trying to format a large document according to the rules of my graduate school. I've looked through the help file but cannot figure out how to get the page numbers right. Here's what I need to do:

    1) The first several sections need to numbered with roman numerals and then the text chapters need arabic numerals. How do I tell Word to switch from roman to arabic at the beginning of Chapter 1? (At which point the numbering also needs to be reset to 1).

    2) The first page of each chapter needs to have the page number in the bottom center. All other pages need to have the page number in the upper right. I see the setting for a different header/footer on the first page of the entire document, but I don't see any way to tell Word that the first page of each chapter needs a different header/footer.

Obviously I could handle this by separating the entire document into separate files - and I'll do that if need be - but then I won't be able to take advantage of Word's automatic generation of table of contents and tables of figures.

Any help will be *greatly* appreciated.

    regards,
    Abraham

The first thing you need to do is make sure that each chapter is in a separate section. Then:

    >>) The first several sections need to numbered with roman numerals and then the text chapters need arabic numerals. How do I tell Word to switch from roman to arabic at the beginning of Chapter 1? (At which point the numbering also needs to be reset to 1).<<

If you place the cursor in any given section & go to Insert/Page Numbers.../Format, you can then tell Word what format to use for that section. It's a section property so you can change it in different sections. HOWEVER, click OK & then close out of that dialog box, don't click OK, OK. Otherwise, you'll insert a page number in a textbox. You can also have the numbering restart with each section.

    2) The first page of each chapter needs to have the page number in the bottom center. All other pages need to have the page number in the upper right. I see the setting for a different header/footer on the first page of the entire document, but I don't see any way to tell Word that the first page of each chapter needs a different header/footer.

Go to File/Page Setup/Layout tab & check the box that says different first page header. Make sure the Apply to is set for the whole document. Then you can go to each first page header & tab to the middle section of the header. You can then visit the regular section header & tab twice & insert the page number on the right.
    Cheers,

Insert a section break between each part of your document that needs different numbering or different headers and footers. Insert>Break...>Next Page is the usual choice.

The Page Setup dialog can make changes that apply to the current section (where your insertion point/cursor is) or to the selected sections or to the document as a whole. This is how you would tell Word where you want the starting page of that section to have different headers and footers from the rest of the pages in that section.

Finally, you set the number format and starting point using Insert>Page Numbers... and the Format... button. This should only have to be changed from the first section (roman) and the second section (arabic restarting at 1), but sometimes you have to futz with it. Note: after clicking OK in the Format dialog, click Cancel in the main dialog, or you'll get an extra page number field code (in an inconvenient text box) inserted into your document.

    So... what did I miss? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
