    Re: .NET Framework 1.1 SP1

    Tony,

Windows Update suggested I should be downloading and installing this patch. I've read the list of errors and the KB on it, but am still confused as to whether or not I need it. I am running a stand-alone (no network) notebook computer, Windows XP Home SP2. When I saw "net" in the name of the fix, I assumed it was needed only for a networked situation. Am especially hesitant as the info for it said "once installed, it can't be uninstalled".

Can you help me with this question or suggest where I could find an answer? I am not very technical!

    Re: .NET Framework 1.1 SP1

    Hi Linda

The .NET Framework is a development and execution environment that allows different programming languages & libraries to work together seamlessly to create Windows-based applications that are easier to build, manage, deploy, and integrate with other networked systems.

Applications developed using the .NET Framework require the .NET Framework to be installed in order for them to run. Though it is called .NET it does not mean that it is only relevant for computers on networks, standalone computers also use the .NET Framework. As an example on my system the control panel for the graphics card requires the .NET Framework to be installed.

You can verify that you already have .NET Framework installed by checking the add/remove program list on the control panel. It is listed under Microsoft .NET Framework.

Microsoft recommend everybody who uses .NET Framework to install the patch as it "provides a safer, more reliable experience"

    Re: .NET Framework 1.1 SP1

    Hi Tony,

Now your answer I could understand perfectly! Thank you.

I did check where you suggested and I do have NET framework 1.1. Now that I know I have it and that it is a necessary thing, and not just for networked computers, I will go back to Windows Update and download it.

Really appreciate your explaining its use to me - and the time it took for you to do so. I also really like the seasonal touch you've added to your graphic ID!!!

    Linda
