Several XP Pro Questions (Pro, SP1)

1. What is the program LTHome.exe? Keeps popping up and saying a ports open.
2. Why can't XP alphabetize better? I don't fall for their line about keeping everything on the Start menu, but on the desktop I seem to have two alphabetical sequences.
3. How do you get device drivers from the Internet? I don't see that option when trying to update drivers.

1. Can't find any info on LTHome.exe. Sorry.
2. Right click on the desktop>choose Arrange Icons>select Name. Do it again and this time select Auto Arrange from the Arrange Icons menu.

I think you are right, Doc.
Lucent had an LT series modem a while back. I think it was a "winmodem" type that wasn't too popular because of it using processor memory instead of it's own.

I was just making a logical assumption (LT = Lucent Technologies), but for the life of me, can't figure out why a modem would need an executable file on the system.

Re: Several XP Pro Questions (Pro, SP1)

I'd like to throw something out for your awareness. I think that the arrangement of the icons on the desktop may have a couple of "hard coded" rules that I've never seen mentioned. It seems to me that Windows (I think most or all flavors) always puts the My Computer, My Network and Recycle Bin icons at the head of the list, starting in the upper left corner. Next, it seems to show folders that reside on the desktop as I use these (such as "Internet Stuff") to collect shortcut icons for particular types of programs and avoid desktop clutter. Next are the icons for executables. I don't have any desktop shortcuts for URLs, so I don't know where they would lie in the order of things. I never use auto arrange and I used to manually arrange my icons the way I wanted but got tired of doing it, so I just made myself "get over it." Nowadays, there's also the recent OS feature of having desktop icons for a logged on user as well as those for all users. There may be more "rules" that I am not aware of.....

Yes, its Lucent, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a winmodem. By the way, the autoarrange didn't do a thing.

The Auto Arrange function will arrange the icons the way you have chosen (Name, Size, Type, Modified) whenever you want to change the way you want them arranged or have manually moved them around or added files or folders to the desktop, or in any window, and want to quickly rearrange things to one of the preset arrangements.

I say again, Autoarrange didn't move even one icon, and they are not in strict alphabetic order.

Re: Several XP Pro Questions (Pro, SP1)

Set your Arrange Icon sequence to look like the attachment and then open it again and click on Name, Size, Type, or Modified and let me know if they don't move to that arrangement. Perhaps my previous explaination was a bit unclear.

The menu in DocWatson's post appears if you right-click an empty part of the desktop.
