Paint Shop Pro 9

For all of you Paint Shop Pro users, or for those who may be interested in a VERY capable graphics program, check out the new Paint Shop Pro 9. Jasc has not yet updated their main site with the final release. However, I pre-ordered a copy and it arrived yesterday (9/2/2004).

This is a fantastic application for the beginner or mid-level graphics user. It has evolved over 12 years into one of the best imaging applications short of PhotoShop. I've owned every version from 3.11 to 9. I love it!!

Hi Mark

What are your initial impressions of the latest version?

I have been checking out reviews of the beta version such as this one and will be upgrading soon. I have owned versions from 6 to 8.1 and it has become one of my essential applications.

Mark

Are there good reasons why the average Joe (and Josephine) User should upgrade from the extremely cheap "Anniversary Edition" PSP7?

Assuming that they don't do anything much more sophisticated than resizing, cropping, and making GIFs transparent?

Thanks Mark

Have to wait to see what the UK upgrade price is. They will probably just change the dollar sign to a pound sign.

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

Hi John,

As with any software upgrade, there are several schools of thought when deciding whether or not to spend the money. Some would point out that the version they currently own does everything they need and therefore they should not spend the money or time to upgrade. Another approach would incidate that an upgrade is worthwhile simply because of the potential for updates, enhancements, improvements, and new features. Both approaches are quite valid, at least within a comfortable time frame. If everyone took the first approach, however, we would all still be using some early version of DOS...

PSP7AE (Paint Shop Pro 7 Anniversary Edition) is MORE than enough graphics power for the average Joe, John, Josephine, Jane, and Jill. It has everything that most users need: Resizing, cropping, enhancing, layers, vectors, text, photo improvement tools, etc... For that matter, version 3 and 4 of PSP had the same features (except layers, which came with 5 and vectors which came with 6).

PSP8 and 9 offer a number of new and enhanced features that will give power users a bit more meat to enjoy. For starters, PSP8 was a total redesign of the interface. That alone is worth the upgrade - it's very much improved! It also added a powerful scripting engine for batch image processing. I've used that quite a bit for renaming, resizing, and manipulating large groups of images. I imagine there are a number of other fixes that are not so easy to see such as improved Windows XP support (since PSP7 was pre-XP).

If you currently have version 8 the upgrade is probably not worth it. If you have a version earlier than 8 and if you can comfortably spare the cost of the upgrade to 9, you probably won't be disappointed!

Just my 2 cents

(or does this make it 4 cents?)

Edit: Oops - almost forgot. Here's a link to the Paint Shop Pro 8 features pages. This will give you an idea of some good reasons to upgrade from 7 to 8 (similar logic applies to 9 as well).

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

Hi Tony,

My initial impressions of version 9 are that it's more of a minor upgrade than a major overhaul. I might even consider calling it 8.5 rather than 9.0 - but that's just my impression from having it less than a week.

Some of the new and improved features I've noticed so far (since version 8) are:
- Sleek, updated interface and other cosmetic touch-ups
- Selective undo (much like Photoshop)
- Image Info tab added to the image Browser (very useful for viewing EXIF data from Digital camera pics)
- Like the review you posted mentioned, the Art Media layer seems like a powerful featuer (although I probably won't use it much for the things I do)
- Much improved Photo enhancement tools (Noise removal, Unsharp Mask, etc); I will get a LOT of use from this!

I probably would not have spent $100 USD on it, but it was definitely worth $50 USD!

Just my 2 cents

Edit: One of the best enhancements that I forgot to mention is the addition of a thumbnail extension to allow Windows Explorer to display thumbnails of PSP files. This is a GREAT feature! I don't know if it will only be available with PSP9 or if it will be released as a free add-on for other versions...

Mark,

I just got an email from them yesterday to upgrade to 9.0 for $29.99 and have a 29.99 credit for other add-ons. Did you get other features with your upgrade?

No.... I paid $50 - which they said was the upgrade pricing...

And they never offered a cupon for add-ons. I might be interested in the Virtual Painter - if I can get it for a discount.

Mark,

Glad you started this post. I went to order my upgrade last night for $29.99 and thought I'd contact JASC first. The company said that the upgrade is $50. It turns out the offer I got was a phishing email to get my credit card number number. If you hadn't posted this I'd probably be seeing lots of items charged on my credit card that I didn't order.

Oh my!

It's good that you caught on before it was too late! Have you forwarded the scam to JASC? I'm sure they would appreciate knowing that someone is using their name for phishing. That's interesting!

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

I have an interesting problem with JASC. I've tried a couple of times to authenticate an upgrade on their web site without success. I have version 7.x which I bought when it first came out, but it was in a store and I sent in the included registration card. Evidently JASC has no record of that registration, at least not in their web accessible database. I've been trying on and off ever since version 8 came out, so I've been at this for a whole version's duration. Unfortunately, in this long period I've had (or used) four email addresses and none of them can be found in their database. I've filled out their online "email" form twice before without any contact from them, but I just tried again, even offering to send in my version 7 CD as proof. Man, it's terrible that if I can't get through to them I'll have to pay retail price!

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

No, I did let them know I got it and they didn't say to send it to them so I deleted it after I hung up the phone. I'll be sure to verify all offers before I order anything again. (I wonder if they used PSP 9 to create the graphics in the email.)

Have a good day.

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

Hi Al,

I had a similar situation when attempting to upgrade to version 7 (I think). I eventually had to make a photocopy of the CD to send to them. Once I established myself, everything was fine. I've had no problems upgrading to version 8 or 9.

Probably the best approach would be a phone call. They are a relatively small company and I've found the customer service to be generally helpful. After your history of trouble with this particular situation you may want to ask for a manager to fix things for you.

Good luck - and let us know how it turns out!

Re: Paint Shop Pro 9

Absolutely wonderful to find a company that ACTUALLY listens to the customer and provides REAL customer service! I took your advice, Mark, and called on the phone. I got a "message taker" who said she would have someone call me TODAY. Within an hours and a half my phone rang and the guy listened to my story, took a little identifying info from me and somehow "found me" in their database. He handled the transaction on the phone and (I'm not at home now) I should have a download instructions email waiting when I get home this afternoon. Amen!

P.S. Thanks for the suggestion.
