Cannot send (XP)

Hi, i have been trying to sort out a problem for a friend, whre they can recieve messages but cannot send.

They connect on a dialup, and the connection is fine for the internet, and to receive messages no problem.

I have tried changed the smtp server to both te email server and the dialup server, and have tried the 'my server needs authentication' and the possible combinations of these.

Its strange, I have triend sending messages both on the dialup ISP email and other ISP emails, but non eof them will send, also they wont send on another email client, outlook express.

I have checked all the server names etc and really cant see what is going on! Any ideas?

Thanks
Thanks,

pmatz

Re: Cannot send (XP)

Unless it is a proprietary network like AOL, the ISP undoubtedly gets this question all the time, and to save themselves money, has posted explicit configuration directions for their customers, typically in the Support, FAQ, or Help section of its web site (which may or may not require the subscriber to log in). Most ISP instructions refer to Outlook Express and not Outlook, but in the case of Outlook 2002, used from a non-Exchange environment, the settings should be the same (even if the dialogs are a bit different... you may well need to use the More Settings... button in Outlook).

Re: Cannot send (XP)

In the above, you say you are sending using Yahoo! while connected to Wanadoo. Generally, this is blocked to prevent use of the mail server for spam relaying. All outgoing mail server entries must match the ISP to which you are connected, they do not need to have any relationship to the server from which mail is retrieved. In other words:

In: Wanadoo, Yahoo, whatever
Out: Wanadoo

Does that fix it?

Re: Cannot send (XP)

Hi guys, well...

Thanks for your help. pon checking over the link you sent Dave, the 'cannot send emails if the telephone number is withheld' jumped out at me. I checked this out and hence found the cause of the irritation! The number is indeed witheld, so we will go about seeing if we can change this. As my friend is only staying at the residence temporarily, it may be too much hassle, but we shall see

am aware of the mail server things you mention jscher, and had checked all this, it wouldnt even send on the wanadoo account so i realised there was more to it than the protocols being violated

Interestingly, I am on a wanadoo boadband account here at home, and can send using yahoo no problem I have the incoming as a yahoo server, with the outgoing as the wanadoo.

Well, thans again
Thanks,

pmatz
