    To 'SP2' or not to 'SP2 '? (XP Pro - SR1)

I'm quite an experienced user, but not a 'techie'. I'm just a home user with a pretty quick machine. I've got broadband, an up to date anti-virus package, (Norton Internet Security), and I run 'Spybot' every day to protect me, (I think!), against malware etc. However, I just can't make my mind up about installing SP2. I'm probably extremely lucky, (says he touching wood as he types!), but I've never had a security problem that I'm aware of.

Windows Updates has SP2 ready + waiting of course, but I guess I just haven't taken the plunge yet. From what I've read, opinion seems to be strongly in favour. I realise that there are some people who've had awful problems + vice-versa.

Could some kind person who HAS installed it, explain what the pros are and presumably why I should install it, and how best to do this.

    Thanks very much

    Mike

I've installed it on several PCs @work, @home, @friends, & @family. Have not had any problems yet. The two best reasons that I know of are 1.) the security enhancements and 2.) the hotifx rollup. You can start here: Learn About Windows XP Service Pack 2 for much more information. Just be sure to backup your data at a minimum. A full system image is an even better idea.

I can't add much to what Joe says, except that I had no problems at all with an XP Pro SP2 upgrade at home, but couldn't get SP2 to download via Windows Update at work. I used the 270-odd MB Network install and it worked fine. (But I still have problems with a blank screen on starting Help and Support, that happened sometime during the life of SP1!).

It will probably be necessary to put SP2 on at some point, so whether you do it now or later is up to you!

I saw a vague statistic that about 1 in 10 people had "issues" when installing SP2, but this carefully failed to say what sort and how important...

I also think it's unfortunate (for those who hear or read such reports) that sometimes reports that say "....<product name> caused blah blah problem for me..." are not really true. An inexperienced user, some other local computer foul up, and so forth, and a person points the finger at the first thing they can think of! I always take public griping with a grain of salt. (Except here in The Lounge of course <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> )

Edited: I forgot to say that I've "only" installed SP2 twice - once as an update to an existing, and then as a full-install after slipstreaming SP2 and original XP Pro CD. I've not identified any problems yet, but am waiting for Sygate Personal Firewall to be updated.
