Paste Special All?? (10.4524.4219)

In Edit->Paste Special, in the Paste section there is an option for All.

I would have assumed that this meant "All options in this section". However, it does not seem to include one of the options "Column Widths".

So, to what does the All option refer?

If it is on ALL, it is actually the same as a standard paste when using the paste button on the standard toolbar. It pastes all contents and formatting. Its the default paste if you don't select any other option!

Well pity it doesn't say that then!

Cheers for your prompt reply.

When you have the paste special dialog in front of you, right-click on the all option and choose whats this. You will see it defines the option. It works with all dialog boxes, when you right click it gives a "whats this" option to explain the option!
Should help with future dialog choices!

Yeah, I tried that after your first post. It just doesn't gel with my definition of "all"

I suppose they could have used the words, "Standard Paste" in stead of ALL???

Re: Paste Special All?? (10.4524.4219)

Not surprising Paul. I recall there being a bug in VBA, with the xlColumnWidths constant not being recognized (in Excel 97/2000 at least) and the fudge "Paste:=8" had to be used in macros. It seems to work in isolation at the interface, but is not accounted for when selecting the "All" option. This may well be a side effect of the same bug. Not sure what the story is for 2002/2003 - sounds similar.

John,

If I select only "Column Widths" from the Paste Special dialog, it will work from single cell to single cell.

You are right, I was meaning in the context of selecting "All", and I'll clarify my post.

Rudi and Paul, with Paste Special | All, the column width will be pasted only when you copy the entire column.

Re: Paste Special All?? (10.4524.4219)

The "problem" might be "compatibility" related. In older versions (eg XL97) you could pastespecial "only" the column width (so I assume this must be a new feature), yet we still had "All". If the routine is still the same, it would not cover changing the column widths, since that is not currently in the procedure.

The XL programmers perhaps added the "onlycolumnwidths" and never considered (forget, too difficult, lazy) adding that as part of the "All" procedure

Re: Paste Special All?? (10.4524.4219)

Thanks Steve. I think the "pastespecial "only" the column width " feature sounds the same as in 2000. Perhaps this is another (separate) issue from the "Paste:=8" issue I mentioned. ?? Regardless, it's a bit of a murky area all round IMO.
