    Hyperlinked Table of Contents

How do you create a hyperlinked table of contents in Word 97? I have no problem creating the table of contents using Insert, Index and Tables..., Table of Contents tab, and selecting the number of levels that I want based on my number of heading styles. But there is no option to hyperlink the TOC entries on the main TOC tab or options or modify. I have gone back and tried the Insert, Cross-reference which lists my headings / bookmarks (depending on reference type I choose) and it does give the option to insert as hyperlink BUT it doesn't create a TOC...just a line with no page number, etc. I have tried selecting my TOC first but that wipes out the TOC when I insert. I have tried deleting the TOC and just create the cross ref but again that doesn't create the TOC. What am I doing wrong or can I not create a hyperlinked TOC in Word 97?

It's already hyperlinked. Default. However, it is only the page number in the Table of Contents that contains the hyperlink. The "Chapter Title" isn't.

The only way I know of to do this is to create your TOC in Word 2000 and then save the document. When Word 97 opens it, the TOC will be hyperlinked (and marked as hyperlinks!).

In Word 2000 the entire entry is linked unless a default switch is deleted.

    Re: Hyperlinked Table of Contents

Charles... Thank You! I believe you cleared something up for me. I had received a document from someone else in my company at another location out of state. They have Office 2000 at that location. I noticed in his document the entire lines in the TOC were hyperlinked so I wanted to do the same in the documents I was sending out. However at my location we are still on office 97 and for the life of me I couln't get the entire lines in the TOC to hyperlink. I also noticed in the document sent to me that did have the entire lines in TOC hyperlinked that when I "toggle the field codes" for the entire TOC and it showed me the TOC command it had switches H and Z that were not in the Word 97 TOC help. So it looks like as you said the verdict is I can't hyperlink the entire line in TOC in Word 97. Guess I just have to wait until my lowly location goes to Word 2000 whenever that will be. Thanks again Charles!

...which also goes to show there's no accounting for taste<g> - (there have been previous posts here and elsewhere, looking for ways to make those confounded Word 2000 TOCs behave like the Word 97 ones! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>)
