    Random Index Entries

    I have a document in which there is an index created by word. The problem I am having is that there are some random index entries that don't appear to be associated with any text---they appear in the index as just a comma followed by a page number. I have searched endlessly for a reference for the index entry but can't find one, so obviously I can't delete the reference and solve the problem that way. I have tried deleting the old index and inserting a new one--and that doesn't work either...any suggestions??? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Re: Random Index Entries

    There probably exists TC fields adding specific text to the table of contents. Text that is not within the document.
    Turn show/hide and there may be
    {TC "Hello World" }
    The random toc entry will be within the quotes.

    I guess I should have said that I checked for that and there weren't any fields associated with the entries. For instance, the index will give a random entry for page 177; when I go to page 177, there are no field codes there--I have show/hide on....any other ideas? Its really driving me crazy!

    I have a user macro that will remove all {XE} entries in the template at the site linked above.

    You may want to make a backup copy of your document, run the macro RemoveAllXEEntries and then Ctrl-A (to select the entire document) and <F9> key to update all fields.

    Re: Random Index Entries

    I have observed this behaviour but did not think Word would be temperamental enough to add the entry on its own, I just deleted the entry in the Index, and finished the assignment. Now I know better. I am awaiting the right explanation.

    In the same assignment, I also came across index entries being placed in the wrong alphabetical position. For example, an entry beginning with "F" came under the letter "B". Has anyone else also noticed such behaviour?
