Using SUMIF in Links (Excel 2000)

I have a workbook that links to several others. One of the links uses a sumif & I need to have both files open at the same time or the cells will go into error. Is it possible to use sumif in a link without having to open the file?

SUMIF works only on open workbooks. The thread starting in <post#=133937>post 133937</post#> has some workarounds.

Thanks for the help Steve. I haven't had time to try out the alternative suggestions yet, but I'll let you know if it does what I need.
