    Bootup and drivers problem

If I boot my box without the monitor switched on, Windows runs into problems. It reverts to some low res display, saying it can't load the right driver (can't recall the exact message or sequence). I can't change it through the display properties, and can get BSODs, safe mode, reboots... until I finally restore it to what it ought to be. I have also noticed (perhaps) the same thing if I don't have my cable mode ON at boot - no internet and a reboot required.

I don't recall this as normal behaviour. Is there a way to coax Windows to "remember" which drivers to load, whether the devices are turned on or not?

    Thanks

    Re: Bootup and drivers problem

    Hi Alan:
That certainly sounds strange. I start up without any internet connection (although I have DSL, not cable). If you run msconfig & look at the startup tab, does it give you any clues?

What about using F8 or CTRL to get a menu of options and select the Logged (BOOTLOG.TXT) option. This might be a timed guess, if your monitor is off. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Then look at the BOOTLOG.TXT in your root directory. The steps with fail showing will identify where the boot is having difficulties.

    Re: Bootup and drivers problem

The modem problem is a "maybe" - it may not be (only) dependent on whether it's ON at bootup. The monitor's a definite - it's certainly associated with ON/OFF status at bootup. My bootlog.txt (for a problem-free boot) contains nothing startling:
    [0000AE79] Loading Device = C:WINDOWSHIMEM.SYS
    (Logo disabled)
    [0000AE79] LoadSuccess = C:WINDOWSHIMEM.SYS
    [0000AE79] Loading Device = C:WINDOWSDBLBUFF.SYS
    [0000AE7A] LoadSuccess = C:WINDOWSDBLBUFF.SYS
    [0000AE7A] Loading Device = C:WINDOWSIFSHLP.SYS
    [0000AE7A] LoadSuccess = C:WINDOWSIFSHLP.SYS

But I did notice what appears to be two identical monitor drivers listed in Device Manager of Control Panel. I wonder if this is a problem - it certainly doesn't seem to be correct.

    Alan

    Re: Bootup and drivers problem

You might try to update the monitor driver. FWIW, whenever I've changed drivers & then gone through device manager to update drivers, it always tells me that I'm using the latest driver.
