    Shortcut Confusion (XP 5.1.2600 SP1)

When I click on a toolbar shortcut, I get the "Windows cannot fine <pathfilename>. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file..." alert box. But, in fact, the target file loads and starts up just fine. I don't get this alert for all shortcuts (they start fine).

Why does Windows think it's lost, when it really isn't?

Have you had any other problems with running programs? Any disk errors in the System Event Log?

My off-the-top-of-my-head suggestion is an intermittent transient disk error, where I would check that the wide ribbon cable (probably!) from the back of the disk drive is firmly plugged in, both at the disk drive rear and on the motherboard (the usual power-it-off-first and disconnect-the-power-cord care needs to be emphasised...)

Later... On re-rereading your post, my suggestion begins to seem less likely...

    John,

Otherwise the computer seems to run flawlessly. The shortcuts that give the alert always seem to give it, the ones that don't, never do. If I go to the target file itself and double-click on it, the application opens without the alert. If I right-click-Properties on the shortcut and click on Find Target, it finds it okay. If I recreate the shortcut on the desktop (by right-click-Send To Desktop (create shortcut)), and try that one, I still get the alert.

Are these shortcuts to file or programs?

If files, is it always the same file type (e.g., .DOC)? If so, there might be a problem with the way the program command string is set up in the File Types dialog, or, in the case of Office applications that are loading add-ins, there could be a timing problem. For example, if you don't get an error when the application already is running, but you do get an error when loading both, that could indicate some kind of load order problem.

    If programs, hmmm. That's strange. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
