    cleaning up website files (xp)

I recently started working on a friend's website, and the site's files are in really bad shape, lots of directories with strange names that have no files in them, lots of unused files and files that I do not know if they are being used. There are 581 files in the main HTML directory alone. (there are several dozen pages to the website). I would like to clean this up so I only have the necessary files and get rid of the junk, and I am trying to figure out how to do this without going through every file and determining if it is still being used.

I am thinking that I will open my backup of the site in FP, open each page one at a time, and do a Save As to a new folder. After I have done all the pages like this, will this new collection of files be complete with all embedded files, etc, so that I can delete the old web from the server and publish this one?
    Thanks

Thanks. It seems to be working fine so far.
