Re: New Sygate Build

Here's the link: http://dl88.sygatetech.com/pub/bws/bws_49/spf.msi (the free version, NOT Pro)

What's interesting is that several days ago, I found the place on their web pages to download this update and did so, but hadn't gotten around to installing it yet. This morning I found a Sygate popup on the screen telling me there is an update, so I clicked through to download it. I first had to let it send me an email requiring me to click a confirming link to get to the actual download. I don't know why they're being so fussy on the free version, unless just to get email addresses!

I also wish they would warn you when the software is going to do something "new" by way of making or receiving contacts! Right after installing, I got a popup message that a contact was coming in from 64.94.110.12 to a driver file WG3N.SYS on my system. I disallowed the contact until I had time to check it out. I don't know what the purpose of the communication is, but that driver IS a Sygate installed file, according to the properties of the file. It's been about two hours ago and one reboot later and the contact attempt hasn't been repeated, so I'll be on the lookout for it. Since it's "Sygate's" driver, I guess I'll allow it. Comments?

P.S. I "executed" that IP address and went to an FTP-like directory of files with a .CRL extension. The only readable file was a text file saying that the files are "Certificate Revocation List" files. A Whois check on the IP says it's Verisign/Network Solutions.

Re: New Sygate Build

Al,
Yes, It was a rather involved security download but the end result I'm sure was to generate a more current email list.

Also, that was one of the first "alerts" I received after updating. I didn't know what that WG3N.sys thing was, so I blocked it and So far haven't noticed any problems by doing so? Have you cranked in a question to Sygate about this yet? It would be interesting to find out just what it is.

No, I haven't tried to contact them. I'm gonna wait and see if it pops up again.

I had exactly the same thing after I installed the update, but I didn't know how to find out anything about it. I just blocked it like the rest of you.

Re: New Sygate Build

I'm curious where you found that link. When I had SPF check for updates it told me that I was already using the most current version, 5.5.2637. So I go to Sygate's site, pull up the site map and go direct to SPF. The page doesn't say which version, other than 5.5, is the current version, but there is a 'Download' button that sometimes took me to a listing of download sites, other times would take me directly to Tucows. In any event, the download I get pointed to is spf.exe. Tucows' exe download is 8.1MB, but the msi download from the link you provided is only 5.3MB. A Google site search for 'spf.msi' on Sygate's site turned up nothing. Interestingly too, I was always able to get to a download site directly, without having to provide an email address for them to mail me a download link.

I like their product, but I think they have a lot to learn about making it uniformly accessible. Are they really distributing the same program as both an msi and an exe? And why the huge difference in size?

Re: New Sygate Build

David,
The Sygate current version is 5.5.2710. ( version 5.5. build 2710 )
Some of the download sites are not yet up to date and may list an older version.
I think the difference in size is the exe file is the full version for first time users and the msi file is the upgrade type, which may or may not be the latest and greatest.
The email bit is an annoying way to get user lists, or so I think.

David,

Here's a link in the Sygate forum for the latest build Sygate Personal Firewall STD and Pro Version 5.5 build 2710 has been released. I think the size difference is because the exe is just wrapped around the Windows installer and therefore contains all the msi stuff plus all the stuff to make it an installable exe.

Re: New Sygate Build

I was pretty sure they were both the same upgrade; I downloaded both and checked the digital signatures and they were both dated August 16th. I suspect you are right about the msi vs exe difference.

... I'm curious where you found that link...

Like Joe, I found it in the Sygate forum. Since I had already had your experience on a previous occasion, this time I went directly to their forum which usually notes new releases.

Re: New Sygate Build

Can someone explain why if they put out a new build after SP2 came out, it does not work with the new Security center and I keep on getting annoying messages that I do not have a firewall installed. What a waste.

Re: New Sygate Build

Sygate is supposedly working on a fix for this.
For now, you can go to Control panel>Security Center>click on "change the way security center alerts me" and uncheck Firewall.

I know, but I am a guy who likes things to work the way they are supposed to. (Maybe I should stop using Windows )
