    Email Addresses (Outlook 2003)

When I enter an email address it appears in the following format in the email: john doe (sillyname@isp.com) I would like it just so the "john doe" appears and NOT the email address in parenthesis. How can I do this individually and more importantly, is there any way to do this for my 500+ email addresses all together ? Thanks in advance for any help !!!

    Re: Email Addresses (Outlook 2003)

Are they (parentheses) or <angle brackets>? If you right-click the address and inspect properties, is it all part of the display name or are you seeing both the display name and the address?

From my experience In Outlook 2002, there is some pattern I haven't determined as to when the address shows in <angle brackets> adjacent to the display name. Since I still use a PAB (yes, I know, I'm obsolete), I don't want to make any extravagant claims about how Outlook works for people who use the Contacts folder as their address book. However, if the parenthetical in the display name has changed from the virtually useless "(Email)" to the person's address, that seems like a major improvement. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I believe you can edit the display name for each Contact, but others can advise on how this may be different in Outlook 2003.

When you enter it where, Coinman - in a Contact e-mail address record, in the text of a message, or in the message TO, CC, or BCC, fields?

    >>> here is some pattern I haven't determined as to when the address shows in <angle brackets>....

I have an odd feeling that after replying to an email that has come in with the From: in that format, Outlook stuffs it into its auto-complete depository or whatever. It happens so infrequently that it hasn't been a problem, but I have a vague recollection that deleting the To: field entry then part-entering the recipients name and doing a Cntrl+K to force a lookup does the job.

    Re: Email Addresses (Outlook 2003)

They are (parentheses) - If I right click on the address and click properties, I am sent back to the corresponding contact page in Outlook - seeing both the diplay name and address (I just want to see the name and NOT the address) - I know I can edit the display name in each contact but for 500+ contacts it is tedious ... is there a way to do it as a group ?

When I enter an email address in the "E-mail..." field on the Contact page and then press tab the "Display as:" field comes up as:
"John Doe (crazyname@isp.con)". It aslo comes up this way in the TO, CC, & BCC fields.

I am not quite clear on your instructions but here is what I did. I opened a blank email and typed in a name, when I clicked Ctrl-K the name was then formated from just "John Doe" to "John Doe (crazyname@isp.com)".

But of course! With VBA all things are possible. Except in Outlook, where it is heavily crippled. But anyway, we've had at least two macros posted for making this change. See:

    <post#=284654>post 284654</post#> by JohnBF

    and

    <post#=284662>post 284662</post#> by me

Now... earlier this year I recall an error when there is a rogue entry in the Contacts folder, because it doesn't have the same fields as a normal contact record. John's macro has some error handling code in it, so definitely check his out first. On mine, it would need edits to work around that problem (along the lines in <post#=377078>post 377078</post#> -- or even more drastic <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> ).

I think they could both use some work. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> I had a feeling the thread would lead there.
