Word and Wordpad (XP Pro SP2)

I am hoping that one of you can help me with an " I hope simple problem". I am not an Office Word user, but you all sound like you know what you are doing so I figured you would be the best ones to ask. After I downloaded SP2, I could no longer open any documents that had any ext other than .rtf or .txt. I have tried changing the doc. extensions, but that doesn't work. i keep getting the message "unable to open Word for Windows 6.0". I can't get into 2/3 of my documents and now everything is saved in Rich Text Format. What can I do? Did SP2 change it? I also just did a Recovery and found out that there are 2 instances of Win XP on my PC. How do I get rid of one of them? I really do sound like an idiot don't I?

Re: Word and Wordpad (XP Pro SP2)

On the association of .DOC files with WordPad, this does not sound like something that SP2 would be changing. However, the WordPad accessory is part of Windows, so it could have been changed in some way.

To re-associate .DOC files with WordPad, try this: open Windows Explorer to a folder containing a .DOC file, right-click and from the Open With "flyout" menu, click Choose Program... (if this option does not appear, hold down the shift key and try again). This should let you open the .DOC file with WordPad and make that choice the default for the future. Does it work?

As for all documents being saved in RTF, WordPad never did catch up with Word 97-2003, so maybe Microsoft took away the DOC option??? Perhaps someone who has installed SP2 can check on this.

Finally, I don't understand that last part about recovery and two instances of Windows XP. Maybe you should post that specific question with a little more detail on the Windows XP board where the SP2 discussion is hot and heavy right now.

Sorry to say that I have tried that in the flyout menu and it doesn't work. Is there some other program that I can install that will enable these .doc to be viewed?

Do you have Word for Windows on your machine at all, or have you been using just Word Pad for .doc files? I've noticed that some of MS security enhancements also reset associations. What happens when you try Jefferson's method with the flyout menu? You should get something like the attached.

I have used Jefferson's method to have Wordpad as the default, but when Wordpad opens, I get the message "Cannot load Word for Windows 6.0 files". I have Wordpad.

For possible future reference, I note that, if you type "Cannot load Word for Windows 6.0 files" in Google's search box (including the quotation marks), that MSKB article is the first hit on the list.

As my Aunt Edna used to say, "Some days you need a guru, and some days you don't."

Just a further Google tip when trying to find such articles:
Go to "Advanced Search" and type your query.
Under Domain, type microsoft.com in the textbox.
Ensure Only "return results from the site or domain" is selected.

This will, as expected, only return hits from Microsoft's sites.
