IE 6 child window problem (6.0.2800.110615)

IE 6 has recently been playing up and closing old windows before opening new ones, even via links to the extent that you have to go to History to get back to where you were. What is going on and how can I remove this pain in the ass?

Go to Tools/Internet Options/General tab & make sure that "Resuse windows for launching shortcuts" is UNchecked. If this doesn't cure the problem, have you tried holding the Shift key down when you click a link. Although it depends upon the website, most links will open in the same window.

    Phil,

Thank you for your assistance. Unfortunately, this does not facilitate me opening more than one session of IE which I was able to do only a short time ago. I find it helpful to have more than one session of IE open at a time. Opera has a Window function that allows you to move from one 'window' to another much like Word does with its open documents. What could be causing this particular behavior?

Up through IE 5.5, I believe, there was an option to open more than one IE session. However, it didn't work like Opera. When you have multiple windows open, you can Alt+tab between them. You should still be able to open multiple windows in IE. Are you saying that if you hold the shift key down & click a link that it won't open in a new window, leaving the old window open?

By the way, if you want to use the IE engine (as opposed to something like Mozilla/Firefox), you can try Avant Browser, which has tabs instead of separate windows. Or look on the Other Browsers & Email Clients for Mozilla or Firefox.

Does Ctrl+N work to open a new IE window? Does Shift+clicking a link in a page displayed in an IE window open a new window?
