Hard drive bootup re partitioning software

G'day. This is a peculiar problem. My friend has a Dell 8000 desktop computer. When the hard drive failed under warranty Dell sent a tech person to replace it, no worries. He left after installing it and formatting it. My friend installed Windows XP Professional, and as an operating system it appears to work fine. But after using the computer for a couple of months she wanted to partition the 80 gig hard disk using Partition Magic 8. However once this program gets all the info re partitioning and reboots to do the stuff prior to Windows loading, it stalls. It always stalls at Step 2 of the partitioning process, the BSOD comes up and flashes past so quickly that you can't possibly read the error message, forcing the user to agree to load Windows, which completely cancels the Partition Magic sequences. PowerQuest were no help when asked, and Dell says it's not their problem, it's a software issue. But as an experiment, I installed V-COM's Partition Commander and instructed it to partition the hard drive into three partitions. It also stalls in a similar manner to Partition Magic - when accessing the hard drive prior to loading Windows. The problem with P-Commander was that the computer went into an endless chkdsk loop. Dell Tech Support was able to instruct us how to stop that loop and load Windows, but we've still not been able to partition the disk. Did she do something peculiar when she initially installed WinXP? Can we fix it?

Have you successfully run CHKDSK? Are you running the most current version of Partition Magic? Are you running SP-1 or SP-2 for XP? Have you checked the Symantec support site for information?

Sounds like you are trying to mess with the "HIDDEN" partition that a lot of OEM's use to store the recover files.
See attachment for the one on my Sony VAIO.

Thanks for your response Joe. No, CHKDSK has not successfully completed. BSOD. It's WinXP Pro-SP1. Latest version of Partition Magic, but same thing happens with latest version of Partition Commander. No I haven't checked the Symantec site, but will do so.

Thanks for your response Dave. The screen in Partition Magic for partitioning indicates just a drive "C", but of course if there's a hidden partition I wouldn't know. And my friend whose computer we're talking about is not computer-savvy enough to have created a hidden partition herself when she installed Windows onto the newly formatted drive.

Here's a screenshot from a Dell Dimension 8300. As far as I'm aware, all the Dell optiplexes at work have this initial, hidden partition, so I would be Very Surprised if your friend's Dell didn't have something similar!

Mmmmmmm..... Thanks John. I just checked my own Computer Management info and I don't have the hidden partition. My own computer is also a Dell, Dimension 8250, so it's similar to yours. But I formatted the hard drive myself. It is indeed likely that my friend's Dell 8000 does have the hidden partition, and that may be the reason that no access to drive C: is possible in the boot-up process, prior to loading Windows. I'll check it out.

"EISA Configuration" is Windows' cryptic way of labeling a partition created by a computer manufacturer for its own purposes. I wonder what's in there? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

This hidden partition holds the files to so a OEM recover. It is also used to burn the System CD's. This partition is NOT accessible by the user except by using the Recover and/or OS Burning wizards.
