    Template save as document (Word 2000/3)

    A template was created and placed on a shared drive.
    Some users open the template in Word by using File>Open and then try to save it as a document - which does not work.
    Any suggestions?

    You could create a Sub AutoOpen in a standard module, that is executed when the template-doc is opened:

    Sub AutoOpen()
    If ActiveDocument.Type = wdTypeTemplate Then
    MsgBox "Do it right" <font color=448800>'Put your own message here</font color=448800>
    ActiveDocument.Close SaveChanges:=wdDoNotSaveChanges
    Documents.Add Template:="TemplateName.dot" <font color=448800>'Use the fully qualified path+name</font color=448800>
    End If
    End Sub

    I can't believe I never noticed that .Type property. It even works in Office 2000 (per MSDN)!

    I posted a more roundabout solution, similar in principle to Jan's, in <post#=114960>post 114960</post#>. That might give you some additional ideas.

    Thanks folks for all the valuable input.
    I don't think the light at the end of the tunnel is an express train any more!
