Acronis True Image kudos

Last week, my system drive (Western Digital 60GB) decided that it was time to end its life. This was the drive that was received May 2004 as a replacement for a faulty unit that was still under warranty at the time. Last May, it took me about 5 days before all systems had been re-installed from scratch. Regardless of the time taken I was pleased as my Win XP Pro installation was kinda bloated after a couple of years and a fresh re-install was welcomed. However, tis not the kind of process that one would like to perform on a frequent basis.

A few months ago, based on reading some of Big Al's comments concerning True Image, I decided to give TI a whirl. That was with version 7. It really seemed to be a pretty good piece of software with the brief tests I threw at it. Shortly after acquiring version 7, version 8 entered the scene and an e-mail to Acronis brought a free update to my in basket.

Luckily, I had just created an image of the second faulty system drive the night before the failure warning splashed onto the screen. Running the WD Diagnostics confirmed the failure. I had a 60GB unit in spare-parts-inventory and performed a swap. After booting up with the True Image boot CD I was able to initialize the new drive and restored the image stored on a secondary disk in less than 45 minutes without any glitches and I was back up and running.

Big Al... if you lived within 100 miles of me I would have hunted you down and bought you a brew or two!!!!

Cheers, Bob

P.S. Last week's faulty drive has since been replaced under WD's warranty service and the new replacement drive is now in the spare parts bin.
Regards,
Bob

Aw man, do I ever love to hear success stories like that, Bob! It's really astounding, the amount of work and time you can save by being properly backed up.

By the way, I don't deserve the credit, I'm just usually more (too?) verbose in my praise of a product I think is good. Being the curious soul that I am, I just did a search on "Acronis" in this forum and to the best of my knowledge it was <!profile=Sinjin>Sinjin<!/profile> who first mentioned it about TWO years ago. Since that time there have been a number of us who've jumped on the bandwagon, including <!profile=Pilgrim>Pilgrim<!/profile> and <!profile=Viking33>Viking33<!/profile> and several others I'm not mentioning. Anyway, as you discovered, victory is sweet!

Al,

WRT... "I don't deserve...", in hindsight maybe I should have mentioned other Lounge members but you WERE the one who stuck out in my mind when I used TI for the first real test last week.

So, to cover all bases... the offer for the brew is on the table for such folks like <!profile=Sinjin>Sinjin<!/profile>, <!profile=Pilgrim>Pilgrim<!/profile>, <!profile=Viking33>Viking33<!/profile> and others that may have planted sublimal messages of TI's worth. (Just don't show up all at once as I don't know if my retiree's income can support the masses!!! ).

As an added thought on backups... prior to getting True Image I used Backup MyPC. A product that served my purpose well over the years but not as powerful a tool as True Image. With Backup MyPC I would have had to initialize the new hard drive, install Windows, Backup MyPC and then perform a restore.

Today it is called golf!

Subliminal, under the keyboard or beer under the table? Tell me what clever words did I post? I want to say those few choice words to my wife to encourage her to back up her laptop as well as encourage her in so many other ways I would use up too much server space with a list.
Thanks.

Your post of <!post=two years ago,170344>two years ago<!/post> was more of a question than a review, but after I filed away your link to Acronis, then later saw Viking33 and others recommending it, I switched. Of course there were other irritants at the time, like PQ being gobbled up by Symantec and some problems (for some folks) with Drive Image. I think Acronis was in the right place at the right time for many of us.

Sinjin,

Hmmmm, '"...few choice words to my wife ..."? I would suggest Bob's (viking33) approach... SHOUTING!!!
